5 Tips on How to Prep for the APs or School Finals

Studying for the APs or school finals may seem like rocket science but here are a few tips, especially in this chaotic season, that can give you a leg up to ensure you are fully prepared on the exam day.

  1. Plan your study time

Have a calendar or journal with the dates of all your AP exams or school finals and a reminder of when you want to start studying (preferably not the night before). This will ensure you aren't stressed out cramming and that you have enough time to study or seek extra help if you need it.

2. Get a topic list

Create a detailed topic list of the material you need to review or learn for the exam. The AP Course Description from the Collegeboard website or your class syllabus is a great place to start. Maybe you don’t need to scramble reading your textbook cover to cover and can be more strategic. I always like to have a checklist indicating what chapters to read in my textbook and what old homework and past tests to go over.

3. Review

Review your notes from class, past assignments, handouts to clue yourself on key definitions or topics that the teacher may focus on the test. For standardized tests (APs/ SAT Subject tests etc), with much broader content, a review textbook can be a great additional resource.

4. Quiz yourself on old tests

Practicing on old practice tests is the most effective way to learn. It will help you get used to the format of the test and focus your study (Is it multiple choice or short answer? Do I need to memorize dates, names, or equations?) Ask your teacher, seniors, or go online for old tests!

5. Take a break

Periodically schedule breaks for short amounts of time in between your studying. Take a walk outside, check in with friends or grab a snack. You’ll be surprised at how a few minutes of relaxation can inspire new insight into a problem.
